Top Locations To Retire to in Delaware — Do You Agree With Us?

Rehoboth Beach, Bethany Beach, Lewes, Wilmington, New Castle — these locations all pique the interest of retirees, but for different reasons. Some enjoy the hustle and bustle of the city, and proximity to entertainment, airports, or healthcare. Others are after a bit more solitude, outdoor adventures, or beach views in their retirement life.

The beauty of Delaware is that there’s something for everyone. While picking the right city for you is sure to enhance the enjoyment you get out of retirement, there are a few aspects of Delaware appealing to most. From Wilmington down to Bethany Beach — you’re never far from the salty ocean air, picturesque state parks, outdoor adventure, theatrical performances and entertainment, or good food.

From our own experience and in talking with our clients, we’re highlighting what we hear are amongst the top retirement-friendly communities throughout Delaware.

Rehoboth Beach

With our owner, Burt Hutchinson, calling this area home, we may be a bit biased in our love for the Rehoboth Beach area. The lively boardwalk is the perfect spot for a morning walk or to bring guests. You’ll never run out of places to dine — we love the farm-to-table and ocean-to-table aspects of dining in Rehoboth — the freshness and variety can’t be beaten.

Another reason we think Rehoboth rates so high amongst retirees is for the wide array of entertainment. Outdoorsy?  You can partake in sailing, hiking, biking, and fishing. Like to stay physically active? You’ll have your choice of golf courses, walking paths, pickleball & tennis courts, and have your pick of which beach to comb. Looking for entertainment? Live entertainment, music, and local theaters are all within walking distance when you’re in Rehoboth Beach.

Bethany Beach

Head down the Coastal Highway to Bethany Beach and you just might find the actual picture of retirement you’ve had in your mind. The sound of crashing waves and sprawling beaches lined with sand fencing and beach grass  — it’s that material that makes up actual daydreams.

While gaining in popularity, Bethany Beach is a bit less touristy than neighboring Rehoboth Beach. The trolley provides a fun way to meander through this historic town, but overall Bethany Beach feels a bit more like a cozy beach town appealing to many looking for a small, tight-knit community.

Lewes

Nestled along the picturesque shores of Delaware, Lewes holds the esteemed title of being the "First town in the first state." Rich in American history, its cobblestone streets and well-preserved buildings make for an inviting landscape — taking residents and visitors on a journey back in time.

For retirees seeking a blend of tranquility and activity, Lewes proves a perfect match. The town's natural beauty, complemented by the Delaware Bay and Atlantic Ocean, offers the perfect backdrop for relaxed afternoons. And for another view, the Cape May-Lewes Ferry is always a highlight for Lewes visitors.

The streets are lined with boutique shops, art galleries, and gourmet restaurants. But beyond the retail front is a proud community with vibrant local culture — it’s easy to see why so many retirees feel at home in Lewes.

Wilmington

For those interested in a balance between urban amenities and a community-centric atmosphere, Wilmington tops the list. While offering a diverse array of experiences of the city, many like Wilmington because there’s not an overwhelming hustle and bustle.

Nestled along the banks of the Christina and Delaware rivers, one of the most compelling advantages for retirees is Wilmington's strategic location. Its proximity to major airports ensures that globetrotting or visits from family and friends remain convenient. The easy access to ground transportation is also a plus if you want to visit neighboring cities and states.

New Castle

Delaware is filled with history, and New Castle is another historic gem thanks to its preserved colonial architecture and cobblestone streets. Not far from Wilmington, and also propped along the Delaware River, New Castle is filled with waterfront views.

Many retirees love the small-town feel of being in the suburbs while maintaining easy access to everything they need in Wilmington. The town's rich cultural events, from historic reenactments to local festivals, make staying busy a breeze in New Castle.
